Access Statement for Coniston Tourist Information Centre
Introduction
Quality, knowledge and good customer service are at the heart of Coniston’s Tourist Information Service. Set in the heart of the old Lakeland village, the tourist information centre is a superb shop window for Coniston and its surroundings. We aim to provide excellent service to all visitors and aim to make the Tourist Information Centre accessible to as many people as possible.
Pre-Arrival

• Clearly worded brochures describing attractions in the area and including contact numbers, email and website addresses for local businesses and the Tourist Information Centre
• Information available in large print by prior arrangement

• Nearest Railway Station: Windermere (12 miles)
Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
• Conveniently situated next to the main car and coach park, which has 55 standard parking bays, 3 widened bays for wheelchair users and 3 spaces for coaches
• Car parking charges: £1.50 for I hour; £2.50 for 2 hours; £4.50 for 4 hours and £6.50 for all day parking
• The Centre is well signposted from the village centre
• Public and wheelchair accessible toilet facilities are available in the car park
Main Entrance, Reception, Display Areas and Gift Shop
• The Tourist Information Centre is open 9am – 5pm every day
• Ground floor level access with no steps. Entrances on either side of the building through wide (800mm) doors
• Assistants are on hand for difficult to reach items
• Split level reception desk with a low counter area and chairs around the
centre
• Non-slip carpet throughout
• Good lighting and colour contrast
• Large airy space and interior circulation for wheelchairs and buggies
• Assistance dogs are welcome
• All items in the shop are clearly priced
Information and Services
• One to one assistance from professional staff and local volunteers
• We promote accessible routes for walkers with limited mobility, wheelchair users or families with buggies. There are 39 routes across the National Park suitable for people with limited mobility
• Accommodation booking service
• Coniston loyalty card can be purchased for £3 providing a wide range of discounts at local stores and attractions.
• WiFi internet available for a small donation to the TIC
• Information available in large print on request

Saturday 2nd-4th May The Lakes Green Boat Gathering!
The Lakes Green Boat Gathering is a brand new event designed to promote and encourage sustainable boating using "green" energy. We will showcase the latest green energy technology and provide an opportunity for the industry to promote its latest products.
There is free access to the public to the whole site (there is a car parking charge) and as it is a Bank Holiday weekend we expect to attract a large number of people. The event will promote a wide range of products and materials to encourage the responsible and environmentally friendly use of our lakes, rivers and canals.
Set in the heart of the English Lake District this three day event will include a regatta of Green Boats, special talks and demonstrations, lake cruises and opportunities to hire electric boats, rowing boats and canoes. Away from the water enjoy the beautiful Lake District scenery with walks for all, mountain biking and a whole host of outdoor activities:

*Exhibition displays of environmentally-friendly products and fuel sources
*Interactive workshops with experts discussing their activities

*Barbecues (and music) on Sat and Sun evenings

Saturday 9th May- 16th The Lakeland 214 Challenge. In May 2009 members of the Wainwright Society will be raising funds for SARDA (England) / (Lakes) with an event called the Lakeland 214 Challenge. 40 Teams based at Coniston Sports Centre taking two extreme routes will form a basis for an 'adventure race. Start 7.30am walking/ canoeing/cycling and an optional abseil taking approx 10 hours. Race Information

The 2008 event will be focussed on and around Coniston Water and will include lots of water-based activities and events. Hope to see you all there.

4th & 5th July- Saunders Lakeland Marathon 2009. The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon (SLMM) is a two-day mountain navigation event open to teams of two. Teams navigate between checkpoints, visiting them in the order given (with the exception of solo Klets competitors). Information

UK MTB TRI
CONISTON/GRIZEDALE Mountain Bike Triathlon Information Another new and exciting event for 09 in this awesome setting in the English Lake District National Park.
The swim will take place from Coniston boating centre completing a 1500m loop in the lake.
The Bike will take the roads for about 3k climbing to lags Wood where it joins Grizedale forest and the North Face trail. It takes in a full loop of this red graded trail which is a mix of forest roads and purpose built single track. After a loop of the trail the course takes the same route back to transition on the roads.
The run course climbs up the slopes of "The Old Man of Coniston" stopping short of the top and traversing the contours on Walna Scar Road an old quarry route. It then descends on the bridleway towards Bowmanstead, taking the footpath through Heathwaite before dropping back into Coniston.Race headquarters will be at the John Ruskin school in Coniston where camping will be available on Friday and Saturday nights for £10.

Sunday 19th July- Coniston Country Fair. Coniston Country Fair offers the visitor an insight into traditional Lakeland. It is a wonderful opportunity to see the local pastimes and traditions.
The fair takes place in the grounds of Coniston Hall and is set amongst superb surroundings on the shores of Coniston water against a backdrop of the famous Coniston Old Man and it's surrounding fells. There is ample parking on the site and the fair is only a short walk from the centre of Coniston village.
